Position: Home - DiskGenius on Windows 11
A Windows 11 system disk almost always uses GPT with several small partitions surrounding the one you think of as C. There is an EFI system partition holding the boot loader, usually a Microsoft reserved partition, sometimes a recovery partition, and often a vendor tools partition on prebuilt machines. Seeing five entries where you expected one is normal, not a symptom.
The practical rule: leave the small partitions alone unless you know precisely what one does. Deleting an EFI partition is a two-second click that turns into an unbootable evening. Our partition management overview explains which entries are safe to touch.
Windows 11 is more assertive about protecting the running system. Launch the program from an elevated session, or half the disk list will be read-only and sector access will fail with permission errors that look like hardware faults. If Windows Security has controlled folder access enabled, recovering files into a protected location such as Documents can also be blocked; recovering to an external drive sidesteps the whole issue.
This is the single biggest change for recovery work on modern Windows 11 laptops. Device encryption is switched on by default on a lot of hardware, which means the bytes on the disk are ciphertext until the volume is unlocked.
On an NVMe SSD, deleted blocks are typically reported to the drive as free and cleaned up by the controller in the background. The consequence is uncomfortable but worth stating plainly: file recovery from a healthy, TRIM-enabled SSD has a much shorter window than from a mechanical drive. Acting within minutes matters more than choosing the perfect tool.
Lost partitions are a different story, because the partition table can often be reconstructed even when file data has been trimmed. The lost partition recovery guide covers that case.
Windows 11 updates are hungry for space. Reallocating free space from a neighbouring partition is the usual fix; the mechanics are in our partition resizing guide.
A migration has to bring the EFI partition and the boot configuration along, not just the C volume. See migrating Windows to an SSD.
A surface scan and a SMART read on a brand-new SSD takes minutes and occasionally saves a data set. Early-life failures are rare but not mythical.
Yes — current builds target Windows 11 directly, including UEFI and GPT system disks on 64-bit hardware.
Not for ordinary work inside Windows. Secure Boot only enters the picture when you boot custom media, and it can usually be handled by choosing the right boot mode rather than switching protection off.
Only while the volume is unlocked in Windows. A locked volume is encrypted at rest and no disk utility can read past that without the key.
It is a write operation on live structures, so back up first. Interruptions during a move are the main hazard, which is why running it on mains power matters.
