Position: Home - Clone a Disk with DiskGenius
Three words often used interchangeably, describing three different results.
Upgrading a drive calls for a clone. Keeping a monthly safety net is usually better served by an image.
Reads every sector, used or not, and writes it to the target. The most faithful method, and the right choice when the source has file system damage or you want a forensic copy. The target must be at least as large as the source, and the copy takes as long as the whole capacity requires.
Copies only occupied blocks and rebuilds the layout on the target. Faster, and it makes cloning to a smaller SSD possible provided the used data fits. This is the everyday choice for a healthy drive.
Copies data by walking the file system. Practical for data volumes; less appropriate for a system disk where boot structures matter.
The common upgrade — a 1 TB hard drive replaced by a 500 GB SSD — works as long as the data used on the source fits inside the target with room left over for Windows to breathe. Clear out what you do not need first, empty the recycle bin, remove old restore points and downloaded installers, then choose the used-space method. Step-by-step instructions live in cloning an HDD to an SSD.
A bootable copy needs more than the C volume. The EFI system partition or the MBR boot code has to come along, and the boot configuration must point at the new disk. Migration features exist precisely because doing this by hand is fiddly. Full sequence: migrate Windows to an SSD.
Almost always one of four causes: firmware still booting in the wrong mode for the target's partition style, the boot entry pointing at the old disk, an EFI partition that was not copied, or the old drive still connected and winning the boot order. Fix the firmware and boot order first — they account for most cases and cost nothing to test.
Yes. Everything on the destination is replaced, so move anything you need off it first.
With a used-space copy, provided the data actually fits. A sector-by-sector copy requires a target at least as large as the source.
A digital licence normally survives a drive change because the motherboard is unchanged.
Cloning and migration are treated as professional features. The edition comparison covers where that line sits.
