Preparation

  1. Connect the SSD. A desktop can host both drives internally; a laptop usually needs a USB-to-SATA or NVMe enclosure for the duration of the clone.
  2. Confirm Windows sees the SSD. A brand-new drive may need initialising before it appears with a capacity.
  3. Free up space on the source if the SSD is smaller — empty the Recycle Bin, remove old installers, clear downloads and old restore points.

Choose the copy method

Copies only the occupied blocks and rebuilds the layout on the target. Faster, and it allows a smaller SSD as long as the used data fits.

Sector-by-sector copy

Reads and writes everything, used or not. Slower, requires a target at least as large as the source, and appropriate when the source has file system problems you want copied faithfully.

Run the clone

  1. Open the disk cloning function and pick the source disk — the mechanical drive.
  2. Pick the target — the SSD. Verify by capacity and model, twice. Getting this backwards destroys the data you meant to keep.

  • Confirm TRIM is enabled — it keeps SSD performance steady over time.
  • Leave the old drive untouched for a week. It is your rollback if something turns up missing.
  • Once you are satisfied, wipe the old disk and reuse it as a backup target or secondary storage.

Check the boot order first, then the boot mode, then whether the old drive is still connected and being chosen. Those three account for most failures. Sizing the SSD sensibly

The temptation is to buy the smallest SSD that will hold the data. Resist it slightly. Windows wants room for updates, temporary files and a page file, and an SSD that is nearly full also loses some of its write performance because the controller has less free space to work with. Leaving a comfortable margin above your used space is worth the small extra cost.

If the mechanical drive holds a large media library, a hybrid arrangement often makes more sense than one big SSD: clone the system and applications to the SSD, keep the old drive in the machine as a data volume, and point the media folders at it. You get the boot-time improvement without paying for capacity you would only use for films.

What to clean up before cloning

  • Empty the Recycle Bin and the Downloads folder — both are usually larger than people expect.
  • Remove old Windows update files and previous-installation folders left behind by upgrades.
  • Delete restore points you no longer need, then create one fresh point.
  • Uninstall applications you have not opened in a year rather than carrying them across.
  • Move large archives, virtual machine images and media libraries to an external drive.

Two practical notes. First, USB adds time, so expect the copy to take noticeably longer than an internal connection. Second, keep the enclosure — the old drive lives in it afterwards and becomes an instant external backup.
